Your Money, Lost Then Found

At Paley & Prehn, we often help clients protect their financial futures—but sometimes, our work begins by helping them recover what was already theirs.

Recently, while handling a tax matter for one of our long-standing clients, we uncovered something unexpected. As part of resolving identity theft and tax issues stemming from a past home burglary, we reviewed police reports from the San Francisco Police Department. Tucked away in those reports was a critical detail: more than $100,000 in cash—property identified by law enforcement as belonging to our client—was still being held in the evidence room at the Hall of Justice.

The burglar had been convicted years ago, but the funds had never been returned. We contacted the investigating sergeant, worked through the proper channels, and successfully arranged for our client to collect the funds—over $122,000. This recovery brought meaningful relief to someone who had suffered both financial and emotional harm.

That experience reminded us just how much money can remain forgotten or overlooked.

Every year, billions of dollars in  forgotten bank accounts, unredeemed savings bonds, and uncashed checks, go unclaimed. Fortunately, there are several official tools to help you search and recover these assets:
